The Biological Chemistry Research Centre of Córdoba (CIQUIBIC – Centro de Investigaciones en Química Biológica de Córdoba) was created on July 30th, 1982 through an agreement between the National University of Córdoba and the National Council of Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET) on the base of the Department of Biological Chemistry of the Chemical Sciences School created in 1963. At the beginning, the main research lines were the glycolipid metabolism (gangliosides and sulfatides) and oligosaccharides (neuramin lactose, neuramin lactose sulfate) and the study of modifications in nucleic acids metabolism by sensorial stimulation. To cover academic necessities of Graduate and Post-Graduate education of the Chemical Sciences School, some other research lines were initiated. These other lines work on the mechanisms of post-translation addition of amino acids to proteins, and also on glycolipids biophysic properties. The original lines were naturally spread towards the current ones that study the biochemical, cellular and molecular aspects of synthesis and transport of glycolipids and phospholipids, proteoglycans metabolism, cytoskeleton proteins, and biophysical-chemical aspects of lipid-lipid and lipid-protein interactions. The members of these research groups are also responsible of the subjects: Chemical Biophysics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Special Biological Chemistry, Macromolecules Biochemistry, General Biological Chemistry, and Laboratory IV. Other derivations promoted the development of a group that investigates experimental aspects of demyelinating autoimmune diseases, interaction between bacterial toxins and oligosaccharides, that is in charge of the subject Pathological Biological Chemistry Part of the actions more recently promoted are: the consolidation of groups working on genetics and molecular biology which are in turn responsible of the subjects: Molecular Genetics, Biotechnology, and Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In 1995 the subjects Biostructure, Supramolecular and Chemical Dynamics, and Bioinorganic Chemistry were also implemented.
The Centre was directed by Dr. Ranwel Caputto until his decease in 1994. Since that time and up to the end of 2000, his Director was Dr. Héctor S. Barra and currently the institute is directed by Dr. Hugo J. F. Maccioni.
Nowadays, 23 research lines in five big areas Biological Chemistry; Pathological Biological Chemistry; Vegetal Biology, Microbiology, and Biotechnology; Biophysics; Molecular Biology and Neurobiology. The number of people working in these different lines is represented by 30 Researchers, 55 Fellows Ph.D. students, 8 members of the Career of Research Support Personnel, and 4 members of the nonacademic personnel of the National University of Córdoba. Since its beginning, in 1982, the original research activity, has produced more than 500 publications in international peer reviewed journals and the education of young professionals interested in research through the performance of more than 100 Doctoral Thesis followed by Post-Doctoral training abroad.
